The incident apparently happened while the flight was descending into New York.

Passengers aboard a Delta flight were reportedly held on LaGuardia airport's tarmac after landing on Friday afternoon, following a passenger's attempt to open the plane door when the flight was in the air.
Passenger Stacy Herbert wrote on Twitter that while the plane was descending into the Queens airport, "a young woman in perhaps her early twenties became suicidal and tried to open the door of plane." Herbert added that the young woman's father pulled her away from the door, while she was "screaming her head off that she needed to open the door and die."

Citing the live air traffic control transmission ATC.net, NBC New York reports that the plane's pilot declared an emergency after a passenger went for the "forward service door" and tried to swing it open at approximately 1:40 p.m.
Herbert tweeted that passengers were aboard Flight #5935, which appears to have departed from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and that they were being held there giving statements for the time being.
A spokesperson for Port Authority told Gothamist that they were "aware" of what was going on, but wouldn't confirm the reports. A spokesperson for Republic Airways, which was operating the flight for Delta, issued a statement saying, "We’re aware of the social media report related to the flight and are looking into it, but what I can tell you now is that the flight landed uneventfully and proceeded to its gate."
