A confusion of hype beasts rampaged through the streets of Manhattan today, outraged over an unfulfilled promise of insane special-edition sneaker deals.

Hundreds and hundreds of people thronged a pop-up at Bowery and Rivington on Thursday morning, all clamoring for a pair of 99-cent Adidas x AriZona Iced Tea kicks. Please just keep in mind, the shoes that sparked the below pandemonium (inspired by AriZona's green tea and "South West" cans) looked like this:

Anticipation reportedly turned to unbridled fury when the crowd learned that there might not be enough stock to go around. People had begun lining up around 3 a.m., eight hours before the 1,000-issue line was set to drop, and by 9 a.m., police had a full-fledged riot on their hands.

"They like to create hype," witness Ty Campell groused to the NY Post, presumably referring to the brands. "They promote for days and weeks to create attention—knowing that New York is barbaric, people are going to step on each other."

People did reportedly get trampled, but that's not all. One Instagram user, who did not want to provide their name, told Gothamist that they showed up last night before that wild storm, only to be given a ticket and told to come back at 8 a.m. today. When they returned, they said, "people got a [little] excited, due to the heat and rain. A fight broke out." Another observer, Lucas Crespo, told the Post that attendees "got robbed, mobbed, and pushed." One Twitter user who showed up around 5:30 a.m. wrote that, by 7:30 a.m., "people from the back ran up started [and] swarming." The situation "devolved from there. For 3 hours the line stayed that way with people pushing/getting crushed."

At some point, one of the hype beasts allegedly threw a glass bottle into the chaos, hitting a woman in the face. "She was covered with blood," Crespo told the Post. "She was there since 1 a.m. and she had to leave in an ambulance."

Police reportedly made two arrests—charging one person with disorderly conduct and the other with operating a drone—before shutting the whole thing down. According to our tipster, those in possession of wrist bands were told to come back at 2 p.m., only to discover the event had been canceled completely. On Twitter, AriZona thanked the "loyal fans" who showed up to brawl, and acknowledged that the pop-up had been canceled because of "overwhelming demand and safety concerns."

"We are actively working to remedy the situation," the brand said, apologizing. In the meantime, does it help or hurt your hype beast heart to know that these coveted sneakers are now available on eBay for $300 to $400?
