Twelve people were injured in a fire that spread through three homes in Brooklyn shortly before dawn this morning. The injured included three firefighters and a baby. A neighbor told PIX11 that he and his wife "heard children screaming, 'Help! Help!'"

The fire started just after 4 a.m. at 1488 East 17th Street in Midwood. A neighbor's security camera shows the moment the fire flared up:

The fire quickly spread to the houses on either side. Another neighbor said, "I saw the three houses on fire," and, referring to 1488 East 17th Street, "Everybody went out from the back. They couldn't get out from the front because the fire took from the front door."

The fire escalated quickly, and there were 170 firefighters on the scene. The FDNY is continuing to identify hot spots.

WCBS 2 reports that all three homes suffered extensive damage, with all three roofs collapsed. All residents in the home where the fire started are accounted for.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
