[UPDATED] Surprise, The G Train's Back!

Hooray.

Update 4:55 p.m.: Oh, hey, the G train's back! The MTA says normal service was restored at around 4:30 p.m., despite an earlier assertion that they'd need to work through the weekend to get things back and running.

This, of course, is because the G train is a magical green wizard of transport whose strength and resilience bests that of all the other trains. But feel free to tell your boss you'll still be late to work.

Bad news, G train prisoners riders: that fun commute you experienced this morning thanks to last night's derailment will last at least through the weekend, and possibly even longer than that. But hey, Greenpoint got Citi Bike! Sorry, the rest of you are screwed.

Per the MTA:

  • There will be limited G service between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Court Sq.
  • Free transfers will be available from the Broadway G station to Lorimer St JM.
  • There will be extremely limited G shuttle service between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts running in both directions on the Queens-bound track only. All riders should use the northbound (Queens-bound) platforms at Bedford-Nostrand Avs, Classon Av, Clinton-Washington Avs, and Fulton St. Riders should be encouraged to use the B38 bus on DeKalb Av (southbound) and Lafayette Av (northbound).
  • No G service between Fulton St and Church Av. Take the F instead. Riders between Bergen St and Church Av who normally transfer between the G and AC at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts should transfer between the F and AC at Jay St-MetroTech instead. Riders between Bergen St and Church Av who normally take the G to stations from Fulton St north should transfer between the F and C or Lefferts-bound A at Jay St-MetroTech, and also transfer to/from the G shuttle train at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts. Customers using the G shuttle to transfer for the AC at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts will need to walk over to the northbound platform for AC service into Manhattan.

It's unclear how long the G will be more or less out of commission, but judging from the photographs of the derailed track, it looks like things are pretty messy down there. Feel free to forward this post to your boss (hi, John Del Signore!) so you never have to come into work on time again.
