The Bronx is Up, But a Bronx Pol Lives Down in the Battery

Earlier this week, the Post reported that "high-profile" Bronx Republican Fred Brown, who is a GOP district leader in the Bronx and votes there, actually lives in Battery Park City in lower Manhattan. Which means he's been voting in the Bronx illegally. Now, the Bronx's DA's office is investigating the matter.

Brown, who is also chairman of the National Black Republican Council and would have been a delegate for Rudy Giuliani if had stayed in the presidential race, told the Post he has lived in Battery Park City "since 9/11." He claimed he could still vote in the Bronx, because he owned property there, but the state Board of Elections told hte Post, "f he doesn't live there, it doesn't matter. It's where you reside, not where you own property." Also, as a district leader, Brown is supposed to live in the Assembly district he represents. Oops!

An anonymous letter had been sent to the city Board of Elections in 1999, but the Post reports the BOE "could not act on the complaint because it was made anonymously, and state law requires a signed affidavit to challenge a voter's registration." The Bronx's DA's office is now looking to see if Brown's voter registration papers were faked.

Brown will receive an award from the Bronx County GOP; the organization's website states, "The Bronx County GOP has made it their mission to make the Bronx a great place to live, work and raise a family." And last year, City Council member Mathieu Eugene had residency issues, because he was elected in a district he seemingly did not live in.
