One survivor of the SUV crash on the Garden State Parkway spoke out yesterday about the tragedy that claimed three teenagers' lives. Victor Whiteaker, who was in the SUV driven by his fiancee's father, said, "All of a sudden, I saw a black car fly past us and cut us off. It must have been going 150 mph! I heard her dad [Dimitrios Iliopoulos] scream, ‘Vinny! Vinny!’ as the car started weaving back and forth. I put my hands over my head and felt the car flip."
The Staten Island residents had been headed back to home after a trip to Atlantic City when the crash occurred. Iliopoulos and Whiteaker were the only ones who remained in the car—Iliopoulos's wife Stavroula, daughter Fontiny, and sons Hilas, 18, and Chrystoph, 13, and neighbor Eric Colligan, 15 were thrown from the car, into the center median and road. Hilas and Chrystoph Iliopoulos and Colligan all died from their injuries. Fontiny Iliopoulos' condition was upgraded from critical to serious while her mother is still in critical condition.
Whiteaker, who was riding in the front passenger seat, says he and Dimitri Iliopoulos, who is in fair condition, were wearing seat belts and doesn't think the others were: "If they were wearing their seat belts, maybe they could have walked away. I only have a little scratch on my leg."
The NJ State Police haven't confirmed whether there was a speeding car involved, but Colligan's uncle was angry, "Just turn yourself in!"
