The spectacle comes 22 years after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 changed the city and nation forever.

A double rainbow is seen from the WNYC newsroom on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023.

A double rainbow appeared over New York City on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, flooding social media with photos of the colorful phenomenon.

The multicolored arcs emerged over the Manhattan skyline late Monday afternoon after scattered showers and thunderstorms dumped water throughout the city.

Images of the spectacle were shared across social media, including the posts below from X, formerly known as Twitter.

“On the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a rainbow forms in the sky between One World Trade and the Empire State Building in New York City, Monday evening,” said photojournalist Gary Hershorn.

Users remarked at the colorful visual above the World Trade Center, where two towers once stood before the 2001 tragedy changed New York City – and the nation – forever.

“Rest In Peace to all the loved ones lost,” said @oldmanbro on the platform. “And Love & Light to all those reliving this trauma annually.”

The day began with a tolling of bells and reading of victims’ names, as has become tradition since the horrific event.

“A fitting end to this day,” said journalist Bianna Golodryga.

Journalist Sarah Boxer wrote on X about the color of the sky on both the day of the attacks in 2001 and then Monday, 22 years later.

“All the NYC feels today. We started with the same warm blue sky I remember 22 years ago to the day. A torrential downpour of thunder, lightning & tears then hurtled down this afternoon,” Boxer posted. “Now this evening, we look up to rainbows abounding all over the skyline.”
