PATH service resumes Wednesday after Port Authority suspends 2 lines amid summer of hell
Aug. 6, 2025, 12:04 p.m.
"We know this is frustrating," the Port Authority said on social media.

The Port Authority said service on the PATH Journal Square-33rd Street and Hoboken-33rd Street lines was resuming with delays around 2 p.m. Wednesday — after after both lines were suspended for hours due to signal problems.
The delays came even as riders were already dealing with ongoing delays due to issues at Hoboken Station, in a summer plagued by constant service shutdowns and delays across transit systems.
PATH began issuing alerts about the suspensions shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Earlier in the morning, Journal Square-33rd Street also saw delays because of a mechanical problem on a train. The Newark-World Trade Center and Hoboken-World Trade Center continued running during the service outages to 33rd Street.
NJ Transit was cross-honoring PATH tickets at Hoboken, Newark and New York Penn Station. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail was cross-honoring at Newark Penn Station, Exchange Place and Hoboken. NJ Transit’s number 87 and 126 buses were honoring tickets as well, and the NY Waterway offered discounted tickets at Hoboken and Brookfield Place.
The issues come the same week as riders experienced delays because of a fire under a train at the Newport PATH Station in Jersey City Monday. More than a dozen people were treated for smoke inhalation in that incident.
PATH is also planning on 10-minute service — instead of the usual 8-minute service — during rush hour on the Hoboken-World Trade Center and Hoboken-33rd Street lines through Labor Day because of switch issues following a derailment at Hoboken in July. Officials say slower service will continue until replacement parts are installed for a component of a interlocking system, installed earlier this year, that they believe contributed to the derailment.
PATH has been announcing cross-honoring options related to that issue on a week-by-week basis.
“We know this is frustrating, and we're sorry for the inconvenience,” the service said on social media about those changes.
The PATH issues follow hellish commutes for subway riders last week that included major delays on several lines because of a power outage near the West Fourth Street station in Manhattan. Amid the delays, a dead man’s body remained at the Prospect Park Station for hours as police attended to the scene. And both NJ Transit and Amtrak experienced repeated delays due to the week’s excessive heat.
