Suffolk County police say an officer shot a man after charging at a victim who had already been stabbed in the neck.

Police on Long Island say an officer shot and killed a man who tried to stab someone already being treated for a neck wound.

A Suffolk County police officer shot and killed a man in Centereach on Sunday morning after he allegedly tried to stab a person who had already been wounded, authorities said.

The Suffolk County Police Department said officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a weapon around 8:48 a.m. behind 2505 Middle Country Rd. When they arrived, they found a 44-year-old man with a stab wound to his neck, officials said.

As emergency responders treated the victim, police said a man emerged from a nearby wooded area holding a knife above his head. Officers said the 29-year-old man, who was homeless, yelled and lunged toward the injured person. One officer opened fire, striking the 29-year-old, officials said.

Police said he was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two officers were also taken to a hospital for treatment of tinnitus, a condition that causes ringing in the ears, the county police department said.

The department said its Homicide Squad and Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating the shooting. The New York State Attorney General’s Office has also been notified, as is standard protocol in police-involved deaths.
