[UPDATE BELOW] A home in Mercer County, New Jersey (around 60 miles outside of New York City) was obliterated by a gas line explosion around 1 p.m. as workers were trying to repair an electrical problem.
The blast, which happened in Ewing Township, could be heard for miles around, but officials believe that no one was inside the home at the time. Five of those injured are public service workers, according to police, while the other two were contractors. The workers reported that they had "struck something" earlier in the day, and believed it to be a gas line, retreating some distance before the explosion happened.
"We're not sure how it happened," Ewing Township Police Lt. Ron Lunetta told NBC Philadelphia. "It's a pretty horrific scene down there."

Officials eventually shut down the gas line, but firefighters are still waiting for all of the gas in the line to burn off before going getting closer to the home.

Police are keeping the public far away from the scene as firefighters and emergency workers secure the area.
Update: Officials now confirm that one woman died due to the explosion. Her body was discovered on the hood of a car parked on the street.
ABC 7 reports that at least 50 houses have lost power, and dozens of families have been displaced due to damage caused by the explosion.
