Police were trying to arrest a man they say was attempting to steal an Uber driver’s car near the Whitestone Bridge.

An NYPD detective was struck and injured by gunfire from his fellow officers in Queens Friday as they tried to arrest a man wanted in connection with a carjacking near the Whitestone Bridge, New York City officials said.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the incident unfolded around 8:50 a.m. when the suspect attempted to steal a Black Toyota Highlander from an Uber driver parked on the bridge’s service road.
Officers from the 109th Precinct answered the Uber driver’s 911 call and were joined by detectives from the Queens South narcotics unit who happened to be passing by, Tisch said at a press conference at Jamaica Hospital, where the detective was recovering.
The detectives sought to block the suspect from driving away in the car while the officers worked to arrest him, the commissioner said. A few minutes later, the officers fired shots, and one of the detectives was hit in the crossfire, she said.
He was struck in his right hand and leg and taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to city officials. Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams said they visited him and his family and he was in good spirits. They did not identify him, but said he had 12 years of experience on the force and was scheduled to undergo surgery Friday afternoon.
The alleged carjacker, 28-year-old Kevin Dubuisson, was taken into custody at the scene, Tisch said. He was not injured in the shooting and did not have a gun on him, but the Uber driver had reported he appeared to have a firearm when he approached the car, according to the NYPD.
Tisch said Dubuisson initially tried to steal two other cars at or near a gas station on Parsons Boulevard and 20th Avenue but was warded off.
Information for his lawyer was not immediately available Friday.
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the NYPD would review body-camera footage of the incident.
