New Yorkers will have to bear another day of extreme heat Wednesday before temperatures cool, according to the National Weather Service.

A heat advisory is in effect until 7 p.m., with public officials and meteorologists continuing to warn about the risks of heat-related illness, especially for older people and those with health conditions. The heat index, which accounts for humidity, is forecast to reach 100 degrees midday.

“This is dangerous, potentially deadly heat,” NYC Emergency Management said in a statement. The agency added that more than 500 New York city residents die each year from extreme heat, and most of them were in homes without air conditioning.

Officials urged New Yorkers to drink lots of water, conserve energy and check on their neighbors. A map of cooling centers across the city is available here.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the lower 80s or upper 70s Thursday and to roughly 70 degrees Friday as a cold front moves through the metro area, National Weather Service meteorologist James Tomasini said.

That will be accompanied by clouds and chances of showers, though not “a complete washout,” he said. Rain is possible through the middle of next week.

Tomasini said Tuesday set multiple heat records in the area, including the hottest-ever temperature at JFK Airport for June — 102 degrees.

JFK tied that record Wednesday around 1 p.m., and set a new daily record as well.

Tomasini recommended that residents should "limit outdoor activity as much as you can, stay hydrated and stay in air conditioning if possible.”
