The transit agency said Amtrak signal issues in a Hudson River tunnel were to blame.

NJ Transit was reporting up to 45-minute delays into and out of New York Penn Station during Wednesday morning's rush hour.

The transit agency said its rail service was disrupted by Amtrak signal issues in a Hudson River tunnel. As of 8:20 a.m., delays were reported to be up to 30 minutes.

Rail tickets and passes were being cross-honored by PATH at the Hoboken, Newark Penn Station and 33rd Street-NY stops, according to NJ Transit.

Officials encouraged commuters to check the agency's website for the latest service information.

An Amtrak spokesperson said the signal issues were resolved and there were some residual service delays.

The latest transit snafu comes as the $16 billion Gateway Program aims to fix longstanding problems with the Hudson River rail tunnels.

Steve Sigmund, chief of public affairs for the Gateway Development Commission, said Wednesday's delays underscored the need for improving the transit corridor.

"The Hudson Tunnel Project will address the root cause of delays like this one by building a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rehabilitating the 115-year-old North River Tunnel," he said in a statement. "When the project is complete, there will be four modern, reliable tracks supporting NJ Transit and Amtrak service into, out of, and through New York City.”
