More Sharks Spotted In The Hamptons

More reports of shark sightings just off the shore of two West Hampton beaches are keeping swimmers out of the water and marine biologists guessing.
It seems that a group of sharks is enjoying an extended holiday weekend in West Hampton, enjoying several leisurely swims along the Cupsogue Beach, where swimmers and surfers have been banned from entering the water since the first sightings occurred earlier this week.
More sharks were spotted swimming alarmingly close to shore yesterday and today at Cupsogue and Smith Point County Beaches, which are both closed. Reports continue to range from two to six fins spotted, though most place the sharks at 15-20 feet long. Beachgoer Patty Slack told ABC, "He came right where that second wave is. He came like 15 feet from us. It's pretty cool."
Marine biologists have yet to confirm the species of the sharks, but they're most likely basking sharks, which eat plankton and are not dangerous to humans. The beaches will remain closed to swimmers until the species are confirmed or when they swim away, which could take a few more days. A necropsy is being performed on a dead seal that washed ashore yesterday to determine whether the sharks had anything to do with its death.
