Prosecutors say the Brooklyn man shoved his girlfriend onto the tracks at the Fulton Street Station in Manhattan.

A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to shoving his 29-year-old girlfriend in front of an oncoming train at a Lower Manhattan subway station last year, authorities said.

Christian Valdez, a Brooklyn resident, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in New York State Supreme Court last month, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Prosecutors said Valdez and his girlfriend were arguing on the platform of the 2 and 3 train lines at the Fulton Street Station on March 9, 2024.

As a downtown train entered the station, Valdez threw his girlfriend toward the track, prosecutors said. Responding officers found her under the train, and she was rushed to the hospital, where her legs had to be amputated, according to prosecutors.

“Christian Valdez will serve nearly two decades in prison following his conviction for committing a life-threatening act of domestic violence in our transit system,” Bragg said. “As a result of this extremely serious attack, the victim has permanent physical injuries, and experiences emotional trauma. I hope the resolution of this case offers her some sense of justice.”

Prosecutors said Valdez left the station after the attack and fled to New Jersey. He was arrested a few hours later after returning to the city while wearing the same clothes, they said.

Valdez refused to speak at the sentencing, according to a spokesperson for Bragg.

An attorney listed for him in city records has not yet returned a request for comment.
