He appeared to be in his 30s and was discovered at the 238th Street station.

The 238th Street subway station on the 1 line in the Bronx is seen on May 30, 2024.

A man died in the Bronx early Tuesday in what the MTA is investigating as a possible "subway surfing" incident, according to transit officials.

Police said first responders found the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, unresponsive between the cars of a northbound 1 train around 3:15 a.m. The train was at the 238th Street station in Kingsbridge, officials said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and NYPD officials said the city chief medical examiner's office was working to determine how he died. Police were not immediately able to identify him.

MTA officials said northbound 1 train service was temporarily suspended between Dyckman Street and 242nd Street after the incident, with normal service resuming just before 5 a.m.

Gothamist reported last week that the NYPD had recorded two people injured in subway surfing incidents so far this year, but no deaths. Police have arrested at least 17 people in connection with the practice since January.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from the MTA and NYPD and may be updated.
