A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said the agency has partnered with ICE to accomplish President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement mission.

Immigration authorities have begun housing detainees at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and other jails and prisons across the country, a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson confirmed.
The spokesperson said the agency, also known as BOP, has partnered with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to enact President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
“The BOP has entered an interagency agreement that allows ICE to place detainees in eight BOP facilities. These facilities include FDC Miami, FCI Atlanta, FCI Leavenworth, FDC Philadelphia, FCI Berlin, FDC Honolulu, FCI Lewisburg, and MDC Brooklyn,” bureau spokesperson Benjamin O'Cone said in an email. The acronyms FDC and FDI refer to federal detention centers and federal correctional institutions.
O’Cone would not say how many immigration detainees were being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal jail in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The facility has housed a number of high-profile prisoners, including Sean “Diddy” Combs, Luigi Mangione and Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking as an accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein.
The facility has long been plagued by violence, corruption within the jail’s staff and what detainees have described as inhumane conditions. The jail garnered national media attention in the winter of 2019 when electricity at the facility failed for a week, trapping detainees in freezing, dark cells.
In a statement, the Legal Aid Society of New York condemned moving immigration detainees to the jail.
“Expanding ICE detention to MDC is reckless and cruel. We are deeply concerned that conditions will further deteriorate due to staffing shortages, restricted access to counsel, and the overcrowding of a facility already unequipped to meet even the most basic standards of care,” the statement said.
