The region is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Wednesday and officials are urging residents to take precautions.

Three straight days of dangerous heat are about to wallop the New York City region, with real-feel temperatures up to 104 degrees possible at their peak.
The metro area will be under a heat advisory from 11 a.m. Monday through 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. When factoring in humidity, it could feel like 95 to 100 degrees Monday afternoon and even higher Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
NWS meteorologist Matthew Wunsch said the steamy conditions will last longer than last week’s spell did.
“This is going to be a several-day event,” he said. “Take it easy, make sure you stay hydrated and things of that nature.”
City officials are warning residents to take precautions, including staying inside in air conditioning when able and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.
Cooling centers like libraries, community centers and senior centers will be open citywide through Wednesday. Officials have also activated the city’s heat emergency plan to keep New Yorkers, including those who are homeless, safe.
“Our fifth heat emergency of the season is underway, and New Yorkers need to be prepared and look out for one another,” city Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said in a statement. “Prolonged heat like this is dangerous, especially for older adults, people with health conditions, and those without air conditioning.”
More than 500 New York City residents on average die each year due to heat-related illness, city officials said. Authorities urged people to conserve energy during the heat wave to reduce the chance of power outages, as well as check on their neighbors.
Conditions will start to cool Wednesday night as a cold front moves into the area and brings chances of showers and thunderstorms, Wunsch said. Thursday’s high temperatures are expected to be in the lower- to mid-80s.
