Two men were shot and injured — one critically — at a public housing complex in Brooklyn on Sunday night, according to police, who were still trying to track down a suspect early Monday.

NYPD officials said the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. at the New York City Housing Authority’s Kingsborough Houses on Bergen Street and Rochester Avenue in Crown Heights.

Police said a 22-year-old man was shot in his head, and first responders took him to Kings County Hospital in critical condition. He was still in the intensive care unit Monday morning, according to the NYPD.

Officials said a 40-year-old man was shot in his right leg during the same incident and was taken via private transport to Interfaith Hospital via private transport, where he was in stable condition. Police were still investigating a motive for the shooting.

Crown Heights has recorded a significant decline in deadly gun violence so far this year, according to police data compiled by Gothamist.

Last year, 11 people were fatally shot in the 77th Precinct, which encompasses the northern portion of the neighborhood — the second-highest total in the city. But in the first half of this year, no one was fatally shot in the precinct, and nonfatal shootings were down 45% since the same time last year. One of those shootings occurred at the Kingsborough Houses, according to NYCHA’s crime database.

At another Brooklyn NYCHA complex over the weekend, a 27-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday night outside Clinton Hill’s Lafayette Gardens Houses, police said. Jahshyim Whitfield was struck in his torso when gunfire erupted around 9:20 p.m. and died at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, according to officials.

The NYPD has not said whether that shooting might have been related to the Crown Heights shooting, and police had not made any arrests in the case by Monday.

Earlier Saturday morning in Queens, around 8:15 a.m., 41-year-old Dwayne Belfield was gunned down near the intersection of 147th Street and 110th Avenue in Jamaica, according to police. The motive behind the shooting was also still unclear Monday, and officials had no description of a possible suspect.

NYPD data shows shootings were down citywide by more than 23% as of July 6, compared to the same period last year — even though gun violence typically rises during the summer, when more people congregate outdoors. Homicides fell about 27% year over year, to 149.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
