In this city, restaurants and bars come and go faster than you can say "sustainable locavore burger." And even though there are great new additions to the culinary landscape popping up every week, you've gotta give kudos to anyone who can stick it out for over a year. With that in mind, we bring you Still Got It, our tribute to establishments that continue to serve mouthwatering meals and drinks long after the buzz has faded—or if the lingering hype is still justified.
Twenty-Fourth Avenue in Queens might be best known for Bohemian Hall, but if you're not feeling their goulash, pilsner and loud scene, the Sparrow Tavern across the street has beer and (mostly organic!) food minus the bro-heavy crowds. The Sparrow really has something for everyone, whether you're looking for free WiFi and coffee to beer and an ongoing film festival.
Brunch includes drinks like the Smoky Mary, a twist on a Bloody Mary but made with chipotle peppers, and local entrees like the prosciutto and brie omelet and a massive brunch burger. There are also dinner entrees like mussels in white wine sauce, a steak sandwich with mouthwatering aioli, and grilled cheese with fontina. And that's all served to a soundtrack of everything from the Clash to Wilco.
And even better: every three months, the Sparrow hosts their "3 Cubed" film festival, where participants are given three weeks to produce a three-minute film based around the Sparrow's guidelines. The films are then screened at the bar, where you can order beers like Laguinitas and Dogfish Head. And did we mention that Smoky Mary?
