Photos: Inside Speedy Romeo's New LES Pizza Outpost
March 30, 2016, 2:15 p.m.
The eatery opens today.
Speedy Romeo's been serving up spectacular pies—including one of our all-time favorites—in Clinton Hill for the last four years, and this week they finally made it over the bridge to Manhattan. Today, their newest outpost opens on Clinton...Street, presumably in order to confuse all the Googlers.
The new spot's a little sleeker than the Classon Avenue flagship, boasting exposed brick walls, a handsome granite bar, bench-backed booths, and high bar tables for diners. Decor includes a salvaged "Liquors Inc." sign from a store that used to exist across the street, and a framed photo of Speedy Romeo, the restaurant's namesake horse. And the kitchen, its large, red-designed wood burning oven serving as a centerpiece, is on display to diners through a window in the back.
Speedy Romeo's real star, of course, is the pizza. Old favorites like the St. Louie ($20),made with Provel cheese, sausage, pepperoni and pickled chilis; the Kind Brother ($20), made with wild mushrooms, smoked mozzarella, farm egg, sage; and the ever popular Margherita ($15) are still on the menu, but there are some local additions. The Paul's Boutique ($22), which references an LES storefront on the cover of a Beastie Boys album, is a take on a pastrami sandwich from Katz's, complete with Katz’s pastrami, Dijon béchamel, smoked red kraut, fontina, 1000 island dressing, and a rye-esque everything crust.
There are also new small bites, like a very tasty Peekytoe Crab Crostini, along with fish, chicken, and steak mains (rib-eye!). And there's a new cocktail menu here, with offerings including the rye whiskey-based Diver Down and the lighter gin-based Meadowland.
The new joint opens at 5 p.m. today, and will run dinner service from 5 p.m. until midnight Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday). Expect a lunch and brunch menu in the weeks to come.
Speedy Romeo is located at 63 Clinton Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets on the Lower East Side (212-529-6300, speedyromeo.com).
