Our First Look At The Brooklyn Barge Bar, Opening Imminently In Greenpoint
June 22, 2015, 9:44 a.m.
We're very close to sipping Rum Punches while gazing across the East River.
With their liquor license in place and summer officially underway, Greenpoint's Brooklyn Barge Bar is poised to make a timely debut on the East River. The new floating bar and water-based activity center has brought its central component down to the water's edge and the team have been busy building out the land areas for an opening date in the very near future.
Once everything has been assembled, there will be seating along the water's edge, as well as on the barge itself around a semi-circle bar and at some picnic tables. Co-owner Will Drawbridge says that they'll offer a full bar but keep the options simple, offering "as many local beers and spirits as we can." Food will be dispensed from the red shipping container kitchens, serving snack foods like salads, a skirt steak sandwich, zucchini sticks and grilled corn.
Besides being a chill spot to catch some rays—and views!—the Barge will be a jumping off point for things like fishing lessons and a launch point for free kayaking and sailing lessons. They're also on a mission to promote cleaning up the East River through partnerships with environmental and ecodiversity groups like the Billion Oyster Project and its mothership New York Harbor School. If you're willing to get your hands dirty between sips of Rum Punch, here's where you'll be able to do it.
We'll let you know when it's officially open for business.
