Once You Go Big Butt Ant Brittle, You Never Go Back

Oct. 24, 2011, 4:51 p.m.

The New York Botanical Garden is getting really into Halloween with a menu of interesting edible insects paired with beer.

Eating bugs, so hot right now. Not only is the El Rey del Sabor purposely offering grasshoppers in their tacos this week, but on Friday the New York Botanical Garden is holding an entire event devoted to devouring creepy crawlies with tasty beers. Yum!

The two hour shindig pairs tasty beers (like Spaten Oktoberfest and Blue Moon Harvest Moon Pumpkin Ale) with bites of insect all set to cowboy love songs and other '30s and '40s tunes from the Ukaladies. And just to keep it educational, there will be an insect expert on hand to talk about all the nutrition found inside bugs. As for the main course themselves, you'll get to sample "crunchy mealworms in a variety of flavors, cricket flour bread with honey, insect-embedded cookies, Green Papaya Salad with Water bugs, and Big Butt Ant Brittle." And really, we hear that once you go Big Butt Ant Brittle you never go back. But just in case there will also be other foods and drinks available for purchase.

The whole thing is $30 for non-members, $20 for members, and runs from 7—9 p.m. on Friday, October 28. You can get your tickets, which include one comp beer, here.
