Because you CAN whale watch in NYC, here are your early links: a Coney Island sand castle contest, MTA's new app, McDonald's latest gimmick, and more from around the city and internet.

It’s Friday morning in New York City where humpback whales were spotted basking in Brooklyn waters last week.
A research team from the Wildlife Conservation Society found the whales near Coney Island and worked to identify them and record their behavior for research. What a sight!
Here’s what else is happening:
- Coney Island will be hosting its annual sand sculpting contest tomorrow, with contestants competing for a $250 prize in four categories.
- The MTA is releasing a new app that will roll all of its services into one place, including alerts and recommended routes for the subway, buses, Long Island Rail Road, MetroNorth and other rail lines.
- A 1958 Mickey Mantle jersey is slated to become the most expensive baseball jersey ever if it sells at an auction for a current bid of $3.25 million.
- A developer bought a piece of property in Fairfield, Connecticut and started building a house on it, but the owner of the land said he never actually sold it, and that a fraudulent deed was used to purchase the property.
- McDonald’s latest gimmick is more complicated than a purple Grimace shake. It involves a London-based skateboard company and incorporates the brand’s references in various media.
- Other people have used the name and likeness of the cannabis apparel and lifestyle brand “Budega,” and now the creator is stuck trying to figure out how to reclaim it and whether it's worth it to do so.
- Between Taylor Swift and Beyonce’s concerts and the Barbie movie takeover, the girls are spending a lot of money this summer.
- And finally, just chillin':
Hippos can’t technically swim, and their high density prevents them from floating. Consequently,

they propel themselves using intermittent ground contact, like astronauts on a moon walk
