Earlier this summer, we fired up the rumor mill by hinting, hoping, and praying that Ben & Jerry's was developing a special-edition "Schweddy Balls"-flavored ice cream. Today, the world's prayers have been answered: it's happening!

A Ben & Jerry's spokeswoman confirms that Schweddy Balls is here, featuring vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum, loaded with fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls. The ice cream company says the flavor is a "'thank you' to one of our all time favorite television programs, Saturday Night Live," which created the Schweddy origins story with a little help from Delicious Dish ladies Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon, and Mr. Pete Schweddy himself, Alec Baldwin.

Possible mayoral candidate Baldwin, for one, was psyched: “For a long time, I thought that ‘Here Lies Pete Schweddy’ would end up on my tombstone. Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry's, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won't go with me to the great beyond...Ben & Jerry's and Schweddy. Two great names in American dessert, together at last.” And Gasteyer chimed in, "As a person and a performer, I am a sucker for holiday balls. And I have no doubt this ice cream will cause many to scream 'Good Times!'"

Take a trip down memory lane to see how Schweddy began all those years ago, then get yourself to the freezer aisle for this limited-edition flavor: these balls won't last forever.
