Its been credited with ushering in the age of the single spirit bar and was unique in tequila bars in that margaritas were off the table.

Mayahuel, a temple to agave spirits and one of the city's best bars, will be shutting its doors on August 8th. In a letter published to Twitter, the Mayahuel Family—which includes restaurateur Ravi DeRossi—explained the "lease has come to an end, and renewing was not an option."

DeRossi told Grub Street he'd "been trying to negotiate a new lease with the landlord for some time now but [had] not been able to come to any agreement."
The bar was opened by DeRossi and Phil Ward, an expert mixologist and head of Death & Co., in 2009, offering dozens of mezcal and tequila cocktails in an intimate, bi-level space. Its been credited with ushering in the age of the single spirit bar and was unique in tequila bars in that margaritas were off the table.
EV Grieve notes that the space won't sit empty, as the current owner of the building applied for a liquor license in the space.
