Where to salsa in NYC...

Salsa dancing is seeing a spike in popularity thanks to Giant's wide receiver Victor Cruz, whose touchdown celebration dance has spawned a large collection of YouTube videos (even the Times is ON IT). To celebrate the Giants big win last night why not learn the moves yourself? Not only will you look cool when you hit da club, it's also a great form of exercise—gotta burn off those 35 chicken wings you scarfed down yesterday somehow. There are plenty of studios all over the city but we've picked a few to help you get started on your hot new salsa dancing career.
Arguably the most well-known studio in NYC, the Eddie Torres Latin Dance Studio is helmed by husband and wife team Eddie and Maria Torres, who teach beginner and intermediate partner and solo classes from their midtown school. Torres is credited with popularizing New York style club salsa dancing, or "On 2," and the couple toured with the King of Latin Music Tito Puente, dancing at many of his shows. Don't get a much better pedigree than that! Classes are held throughout the week and are some of the cheapest in the city. For a mere $15 you get a two and half hour class and the opportunity to dance with a salsa legend.

Dance On 2 Studios offers beginner and intermediate turn pattern classes as well as classes just for the ladies on styling and shines. Classes are a modest $18 each but we recommend the Salsa Boot Camp option: four weeks of classes for $80 plus free admission to the studio's "Practice Parties," which feature complimentary wine and are a great way to practice your new skills. The school also features specialty workshops such as Bachata, Cha Cha Cha and Merengue if you want to expand your Latin dance horizons.

Perhaps best known for its ballroom dancing program, Dance Manhattan also offers salsa classes on Mondays and Thursdays to all levels of dancers. Although they do offer drop-in classes for $25 during the first two weeks of a course, the emphasis at this studio is on the long-term study of a particular style of dance. Students opting for just one course pay $80 for four hour-long sessions over four weeks. There are many different options and packages available to fit any budget or schedule and all enrolled students are eligible for free admission to practice sessions and parties to fully immerse themselves in dance. For those looking for a one time experience, the studio is offering a "crash course"-style salsa class on March 4th for $30.

Queens studio Mambo Bravo offers weekly beginner through advanced classes in the On2 style also for the low price of $15 per class. The studio trains professional salsa dancers but also encourages beginners to "meet new people, refine your dance skills, make a new hobby, socialize with friends who enjoy the same hobby, and exercise and burn fat while you dance." Snag a 10 class card for $145 if you're truly serious about learning to salsa or just walk in to any class (solo or with a partner) to see what the buzz is all about.

Brooklynites can get their salsa on at Salsa Salsa Dance Studio in Park Slope. Learn basic steps, turns and shines either in a single class ($20) or a monthly package (starting at $65). Every other Friday the studio sponsors socials with a DJ and percussionist so students can practice their moves and meet other budding salsa dancers. Brooklyn Breeders will be happy to know that the studio also offers classes for children!
