Bob Dylan-Inspired Musical 'Girl From The North Country' Coming To Broadway

Two years ago, Girl From The North Country—a Depression-era musical featuring the songs of Bob Dylan—made its debut in London, before heading to The Public Theater in Manhattan for an Off-Broadway production last year. Now, it's officially headed to Broadway, where you'll get to enjoy some of Dylan's greatest songs in a play written and directed by Irish playwright Conor McPherson.

Set in Duluth, Minnesota in 1934—approximately seven years before Dylan was born there—the show tells the stories of residents in a Depression-era Midwestern boarding house. "It’s about how people are trying to deal with being alive in the world, and struggling to fulfill their dreams, and it invites the bigger questions — the stuff of plays and art and songs," McPherson told the NY Times. "And it feels like a lot of the uncertainties of the 1930s seem to be back — the sense of destabilization that was around then, where people feel a little unsafe. That time speaks to our time, for sure."

Throughout the various stagings on the play over the past two years, McPherson noted that he's continued tinkering with it, adding a song here or there. The Original London Cast Recording, which was released in 2017, can you give you a pretty good idea of the eclectic mix of songs to expect in the production, including, "Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love)," "Slow Train," "I Want You," "Sweetheart Like You," "Hurricane," "You Ain't Goin Nowhere," "Forever Young," "Like A Rolling Stone" and more.

Girl From the North Country will begin performances at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre on February 7th, 2020, and open Thursday, March 5th. The cast, which previously included Shirley Henderson and Ciarán Hinds, has not been announced for the new production yet.
